A travel backgammon set has to reconcile three often conflicting demands: it must be compact (fitting in a rucksack or suitcase), practical (quick to set up and put away) and offer an acceptable playing experience (checkers that do not blow away at the first gust of wind).
Types of Travel Backgammon Set
1. Magnetic sets
Magnetic sets are ideal for playing on the move (train, plane). The checkers have a magnetic disc that holds them in place. The downside: the magnets can sometimes catch neighbouring checkers, and the thinness limits durability.
- Pros: no checkers falling off, lightweight
- Cons: magnets weaken over time, thin board
- Ideal for: public transport, cramped spaces
2. Compact folding wooden sets
A solid-wood backgammon set does exist in a travel format — usually 25–35 cm when closed. Wood is far more durable than plastic while staying compact. It is our preference for regular travellers.
- Pros: durability, good looks, a feel close to a standard board
- Cons: heavier, slightly bulkier
- Ideal for: long trips, terraces, picnics
3. Plastic/vinyl sets
Soft plastic sets are the lightest and cheapest. The vinyl or plastic board rolls up or folds flat. The lightweight plastic checkers are practical but less pleasant to handle.
- Pros: ultra-light, very compact, low price
- Cons: fragile, checkers that roll, not very pleasant to use
- Ideal for: hiking, when weight must be kept to a minimum
4. 3-in-1 sets with chess and draughts
Some combined travel sets (backgammon + chess + draughts) are an excellent all-round solution. One purchase covers several games. Look for models with reversible pieces and a sturdy board.
What to Look For
| Criterion | What to check |

| Weight | Under 600 g for a travel set, under 300 g for an ultra-light one |
| Fastening | A sturdy zip, clasp or Velcro closure |
| Checker grip | High enough edges, non-slip board |
| Checker size | At least 25 mm in diameter to be playable |
| Doubling cube included | Essential if you play seriously |
Our Recommendations by Use
Plane / Train
A flat magnetic set (about 30 cm). Rigid board with magnets in the checkers. Light, discreet, with no risk of losing pieces in turbulence.
Beach / Camping
A wooden or vinyl set with sealed storage (sand gets into the corners). Avoid magnetic sets (sand sticks to the magnets). Choose heavy checkers that will not blow away.
Lightweight hiking
An ultra-light plastic/vinyl set weighing under 200 g. Forget playing quality and put lightness first. Sets in a fabric pouch with plastic checkers will do.
Looking After a Travel Backgammon Set
Travel sets take more punishment than sets kept in the living room. A few care tips:
- Always store it flat, never on its end (to avoid warping the board)
- Wipe it down after every outdoor use (damp, sand)
- For wood: apply a light coat of linseed oil once a year
- Replace zips if they stick (it costs very little)
